AN ANALYSIS OF COMMUNICATION STRATEGIES USED BY ENGLISH TEACHERS OF MAN 1 BENGKULU

  • This research is aimed at finding the communication strategies as one of the components of communicative competence used by English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu and which one is dominantly used by the English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu. The subject of this research was three English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu. Mix method design is the methodology of the research and the data was collected by using transcription of video recording and observation sheet. The transcription was consisted of ninety minutes of teaching and learning activity of each teacher. The observation sheet was consisted of sub-categories of communication strategies by Celce Murcia (1995), tally, number, and the description. A formula from Sudijono (2010) was used in finding the percentage of the communication strategies used by the teachers in order to find which strategy is dominantly used by the English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu. The result of the data analysis shows that seven from sixteen sub-categories of communication strategies are not employed by the English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu. Sub-categories of communication strategies used by the teachers are: restructuring (0.42%), nonverbal signals (6.30%), code switching (34.90%), using gambits/fillers/hesitation device (21.00%), self and other repetition (8.40%), self initiated repair (4.62%), self-rephrasing (2.94%), appeals for help (10.50%), and meaning negotiation (10.92%). The finding shows that English teachers of MAN 1 Bengkulu dominantly used achievement or compensatory strategy with the total of percentage 41.62% as their strategy in communicating with the students in the teaching and learning activity.
