- This is a descriptive study that aims to find out the students’ difficulties in comprehending procedure text and to identify the factors causing students’ difficulties in comprehending procedure text in SMP Negeri 1 Muara Kemumu. The data was gain through three instruments respectively questionnaire, test and interview. The respondents were 72 students of Grade VII SMP Negeri 1 Muara Kemumu. The result indicated that the difficulties faced by students in grade VII of SMP Negeri 1 Muara Kemumu in comprehending procedure text were the ability to identify the goal of the text, the ability to understand the information stated in every step in the text, and the ability to deal with the synonyms and contextual meaning of words used in the text. Regarding to the factors that cause the difficulties in comprehending procedure text, it was found that students mostly do not know the meaning of the text written in English. Students do not understand what the question means for. The steps in long sentences are difficult to understand. Students do not know how to find the answer in the text. Besides, students also had a very poor experience in English course from the previous level of education and students do not work really hard, some of students were not honest and just guessed the answer in test. Moreover, other factors related to the limited vocabulary mastery, limited time to teach procedure text in class, action verbs are difficult to teach to students, and students’ attitude in studying English in teaching and learning in classroom.
