STUDENTS’ CODE SWITCHING DURING MOTION AND EVALUATION EVALUATION DISCUSSION PERFORMED BY ENGLISH DEBATERS (A Case Study of English Debate Club at the University of Bengkulu)

  • The aim of this research was to investigate code switching perfomed by the members of English debate club Unib during motion and evaluation discussion. The type of this research was descriptive qualitative research. The subject of the research were three debaters in English debate club. The instruments were observation checklist and interview. The data were the recording of the motion and evaluation discussion on 05 th May 2018. In analyzing the data, the researcher transcribed the recording, classified the data which can be categorized as code switching based on Poplack’s theory, analyzed the reasons of the debaters to switch code, makes a percentage and draw conclusion. The result shows there were three types of code switching performed by the debaters when delivering the idea. The type of code switching appeared were inter-sentential switching (28%), intra-sentential switching (66.7%), and tag switching (5.3%). In addition, there were some reasons of the debaters to switch the code in delivering the idea namely the essential of using interjection, repetition used for clarification, and intention of clarifying the speech for interlocutor.
