A STUDY OF STUDENTS’ ABILITY IN ENGLISH GRAMMAR (Third Year Students of English Education Study Program Bengkulu University Academic Year 2017/2018)

  • This study is aimed to find out and describe the students’ ability in English grammar and to know the most dominant type errors in accordance with Dulay, et-al. (1982) in surface strategy taxonomy. The sample population of this study were 76 students. The type of this research was descriptive quantitative research. In this research, the researcher collected the data by administrating a test namely grammaticality judgement test. The results of this study showed that the ability of the third year students of English Education Study Program Bengkulu University 2017/2018 in English grammar was relatively “low”, the evidence is based on the calculation of average score of 76 students that is 49.29. The students’ ability was “low” because English grammar especially tenses were rarely used, especially in daily conversation. This research showed that the English tenses are somehow difficult for students to learn. In addition, it is because the structural differences between L1 and L2. The highest frequency of errors in twelve English tenses was future perfect continuous tense with the total of error 459 or 11.1 %. Based on the research result, all of the students committed all types of error based on surface strategy taxonomy, and the most dominant type error was “misordering” with the frequency 1132 of errors or 24.4%. It is because most of the students are confused in placing a word in a sentence.
