AN ANALYSIS OF NEEDS IN THE USE OF ENGLISH FOR SPECIFIC PURPOSES ( ESP ) OF THE FRONT DESK STAFF HOTELS IN BENGKULU CITY

  • This study is intended to identify specific English language needs of front desk office staff hotel in Bengkulu city. The sample of this study were 24 front desk office employees there were 8 respondents from Amaris, 10 from Santika and 6 from spalsh Hotel. The data of this study were collected through an adapted questionnaire, and interview. The questionaaire were analyzed by using the Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) 16 The results of this study indicates that the speaking skill was very maximally needed, listening was maximally needed, reading was minimally needed and Writing skill was very minimally needed. Meanwhile the topic of speaking needed by the front desk staff was “ Making conversation dealing with problems and complaints ; the topic of listening was “ Listening and practising dealing with guest situations and complaints “ in the topic of reading “ reading about menu “. In writing, the most topic needed was “ Writing letters, e-mails or faxes. Based on the data obtained from interview they chose speaking and listening because they thought that the two skills were more needed than other skills because both of them were closely related. From the finding. Finally, It is recommended that curriculum designers make use of the result of this study, and the hotel manager as well as the stake holder can prepare language trainning program in improving their employees’ English skill.
