ENGLISH TEACHERS’ STRATEGIES IN USING POWERPOINT AS A TEACHING MEDIA AT SMAN 5 KOTA BENGKULU

  • This research aimed to find out the strategies and the dominant strategies used by English teachers in using PowerPoint as a teaching media at SMAN 5 Kota Bengkulu. This was a descriptive research and the subject of this research was two English teachers who taught at tenth and eleventh grade of SMAN 5 Kota Bengkulu. The data were collected by using observation checklist and interview. The data were analyzed by using steps: 1) Transcribing the interview into written form, 2) Classifying teachers’ strategies, 3) Calculating teachers’ strategies using percentage formula to find out the frequency of each strategy used by the teachers, 4) Deciding the dominant strategy used by the teachers. The result shows the strategies used by English teacher; play music to set the mood for learning (0), display a question at the beginning (2.95), combine PowerPoint with in-class activities (5.16), offer fill in the blank slide (0), compare and contrast (2.58), branching presentation (0), and interactive games (1.47). From the result, it can be conclude that the dominant strategy which applied by the teachers was combine PowerPoint with in-class activities. Key Words: Teachers’ strategies, PowerPoint
