- This research aimed to find out students’ preferences in choosing English reading materials at second grade of SMPN 1 PondokKelapa Bengkulu Tengah. The population of this research was all second grade students of SMPN 1 PondokKelapa Bengkulu Tengah. The method used in this research was descriptive quantitative. This research used total sampling technique in deciding the sample. The number of sample was 73 students. The data were collected by using a set of questionnaire, which consisted of 60 items. To analyze the data, the researcher used the formula of =∑M×N/∑N. The result of this research shows that second grade students of SMPN 1 Pondok Kelapa Bengkulu Tengah preferred reading authentic materials. The total average was 4.11. It means that they “Like” reading authentic materials. It is important to English teacher to select the appropriate reading materials to students’ preferences..
