TIMPROVING STUDENTS’ SPEAKING ENGLISH ABILITY BY USING TALKING CHIPS

  • The objective of this research was to improve students’ speaking English ability by using Talking Chips. The subject of this research were the students of Grade VIII B of SMP Negeri 16 Kota Bengkulu in the academic year 2015/2016. This research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) which consisted of two cycles. Each cycle involves four stage namely ; plan, action, observation, and reflection. The data of the research was taken from observation checklist and the turn taking frequency which the collaborator observed from video recording.The datahas been analyzed with a quantitative technique. In cycle 1, the results of the observation checklist showed that8 students were in active category or 27,4% of 31 students. This result did not achieve the indicator of success of this research so the researcher conducted the cycle 2. In the cycle 2, the results of this research showed that there were 21 students or 67,7% of 31 students already active in Speaking English while the target of the succesfulness of this research was 65%. It means that this research was succees to achieve the indicator of success. The number of chips used in turn-taking were also increased from the cycle 1 to cycle 2, or from 46 chips to 74 chips. It indicated that the students already confident to speak English voluntarily. From the result above,it could be concluded that this research was succees to improve the students’ speaking ability in Grade VIII B students of SMP Negeri 16 Kota Bengkulu by using Talking Chips Technique.
