- The study aimed to determine the effectiveness of gestalt counseling with empty chair technique to the improvement of social skills, aspects of selfcontrol on Jojo and Tegar VIII.1 grade students of SMPN 18 Kota Bengkulu. The research was a qualitative case study with samples of 2 students. The research samples were determined by purposive sampling, ie sampling specified for certain specific purposes. Data collection methods used were interviews and observation checklist. This research was conducted during 8 meetings where each student conduct counseling one time and three times of the application of treatment with empty chair technique. Based on the analysis, it indicated that the gestalt counseling with empty chair technique was effective in improving students’ social skills, especially in the aspect of self-control and communication. It was evident that there was influence of gestalt counseling with empty chair technique toward the students’ social skills, seen from the observation of the students was costantly increasing. As Jojo, before being given treatment Jojo got a total score of 5 in the category of very less, the first counseling, Jojo got a total score of 9 in poor category, in the second counseling Jojo got a total score of 15 in both categories, and the third counseling, Jojo got a total score of 20 with very good category. Likewise with Tegar, before being given treatment Tegar got a score of 7 with category of very less, in the first counseling , Tegar got a total score of 11with a less category, in the second counseling Tegar got a total score of 18 with good category, and in the third counseling, Tegar got score 25 with very good category. This proved that the gestalt counseling with empty chair technique was effective on improving students’ social skills. Keyword: Gestalt Counseling, Empty Chair Technique, Social Skills
