AN ANALYSIS OF ENGLISH TEACHERS’ STRATEGIES IN OPENING THE LESSON AT SMK N IN KOTA BENGKULU

  • This research investigated the strategies used in opening the lesson by English teachers at SMK N in Kota Bengkulu. The design of this research mixed method that combined quantitative and qualitative method. The samples of this research were six English teachers at SMK N in Kota Bengkulu. The data were collected by using observation checklist, video and audio recorder, and interview. The result shows there were eight strategies applied by English teachers at SMK N in Kota Bengkulu : saying greetings which become the most dominant strategies in opening the lesson applied by the teachers (100%), checking absences (53.3%),handling lateness (33.3%), showing picture or video (20%), discussing previous lesson (73.3%), introducing the objectives of the lesson (13%), giving direction (66.6%), and giving prior question (86.6%). From the result, it can be concluded there were still some teachers seldom applied some strategies, such as: introducing the objectives of the lesson and showing picture or video in opening the lesson whereas this strategy was important one as stated by Hemiati (2013). So it is hoped for English teacher to improve their ability in using strategies in opening the lesson activity. Key Words : English Teachers’ Strategies in Opening the Lesson
