Common Moral Values Found in Narrative Passages of English Textbooks of Junior High School and Teacher Strategies in Implementing Them

  • Moral value has become main issue in every element of education, especially at school. All school elements have responsibility in building students’ characters based on moral value. This study investigated; 1). moral values in narrative passages at secondary level English textbook and 2). the way English teachers implement moral values found in narrative passages in the classroom. The corpus for this study consisted of 20 English narrative textbooks and English Teachers. Checklist, observation and interview were employed in this study. The results show that there were 16 moral values in narrative passages of English textbooks, namely: sincere, honesty, humble, affection, discipline, economize, no surrender, justice, positive thinking, independence, peacefuness, tolerance, emotional control, responsibility, creativity, hardworking and collaboration. English teachers dominantly taught moral values to the students by asking them to read the text carefully and by asking them to predict each of the character, whether it was good, bad or common characters. Teachers assigned to perform a drama to the class or to perform a role play to demonstrate the moral values based on the role or character in the story. There were 4 ways English teachers implement moral values of narrative passages in the classroom, namely: story method, parable method, discussion (role play) and habituation method.
