- The teaching of English for Specific Purposes (ESP) at Trisakti University in Jakarta, Indonesia is faculty based and aims to develop reading and writing skills and structural knowledge of English using language samples from content areas related to disciplines within each faculty. This approach was developed with the assumptions that the more specific the content of the language subject/course the more motivated the learners would be. As Hutchinson and Waters state, “motivation is needed more than needs analysis and ESP learners should be intrinsically motivated (Hutchinson & Waters, 1987)”. This paper discusses the views of ESP teachers, ESP students and content teachers that were expressed during interviews and questionnaires that formed part of an Action Learning project on motivation and the learning of ESP at the Department of Industrial Engineering, the Faculty of Industrial Technology, Trisakti University. The views expressed show that Indonesians students will not be automatically intrinsically motivated even if they choose to enroll in ESP during their university study.
