  • Bogor is a city in West Java, which known as a colonial resort city and botanical center. This character was evident in the streetscapes of the city center, where the botanical garden, giant trees and old colonial buildings configure the city’s distinctive identity. However, Bogor undergoes a dynamic process of growth and changes driven by the power of global economic forces. New developments occur without regard to the local and historical context and threaten the urban identity. As street is the main channel where all people move in the city, streetscapes character is an immediate source that people grasp and create the general image and identity of the city. Physical form of streetscapes will determine the people’s perception on the urban identity. Identifying streetscape character in a city is an approach to discover the urban identity. This paper attempts to describe the formation of Bogor urban identity based on the imageability and distinctiveness of the streetscape character in Bogor city center, by identifying the physical characteristics, activities, meaning and public perceptions of the streetscape character. The preliminary result shows that Bogor urban identity is a complex combination between old and new characteristics. According to both residents and visitors perceptions, the imageability and distinctiveness of Bogor streetscapes character are composed by big-shady old trees and colonial buildings, combined with modern shopping malls, fashion outlets and fancy restaurants. The city has a meaningful history as colonial resort city, having a local symbol as a center for agriculture education and tourism which oriented on botanical and historical potential of the city. However, Bogor nowadays is also a destination for shopping and culinary tourism which represent modern lifestyle. Managing those old and new elements is needed in order to maintain the existing identity, as well as acquiring new but supportive identity
