  • The objective of the study was to determine the problems and productivity of disadvantaged older persons in a poor sub-district in Jakarta and compare the community with ROK-ASEAN pilot study on community-based home care in Indonesia. The method of study was a cross-sectional observation done in Tegal Alur sub-district, west Jakarta of 400 poor and neglected older persons living in the community where a cohort was taken for the ROK-ASEAN pilot study. The questionnaire used recorded demographic data and needs of older persons as well as measured Activities of Daily Living/ Instrumental Activities of Daily Living (ADL/IADL). The interviewers were home helpers of the pilot study. The results of the study showed that in Tegal Alur sub-district, the majority of disadvantaged older persons were women, among problems of these older women, health ranked first followed by economic problems. The majority of health problems among both genders were degenerative health problems namely motor disability, eye, stroke and hypertension. In terms of productivity, older women were more independent as measured by ADL/IADL than older men in the pilot study cohort.
