  • Growth and alginate content of Sargassum sp were influenced by light intensity and nutrient absorption due to culture depth
  • The study was conducted at July 13 until September 7, 2016 at the Coastal Waters of Aeng Bau-Batu, North Galesong District, Takalar Regency, South Sulawesi Province apllyed long line within bamboo raft. Seaweed of Sargassum spp was obtained from study site. Complete Randomized Design (CRD) was the experimental design applied with three treatments, namely 30 cm, 45 cm, and 60 cm culture depth below water surface, each with three replicates. Data on growth was analysed using Analysis of Variance (ANOVA), followid with W-Tuket Test. Data on alginate production and content as well as water quality parameter were anlysed descriptively using table and references. The results showed different depths significantly influence the seaweed growth. The 60 cm culture depth gave highest growth, relative compared to growth at 45 cm and 30 cm depth. Sargassum spp AT 30 cm depth gave highet alginate content. The lowest alginate content was obtained at 60 cm depth. Key Words: alginate, water depth, growth, production, Sargassum.
