  • Developments in technology and industry have a negative impact in the form of waste containing with heavy metals that may cause environmental problems such as soil contamination. Phytoremediation as a recovery of contaminated soil using plants is the effective technology, inexpensive and environmentally friendly. Effectiveness of the process influenced by the quantity and absorption ability of plants and types of metal contaminants. This research was conducted using laboratory-based experiments, at Laboratory of assesment Institute for Agriculture Technology Maros - South Sulawesi. This research was conducted for 21 days using vetiver plants/akar wangi (Vetiveria zizanioides) which growth in soil medium contaminated with Zn 532 ppm and Cu 50 ppm. Cultivation was carried out with three variations of plants density (3 stems, 6 stems, and 9 stems). The results showed that the variation of density clumps of 9 stems are more effectiveness than the clumps of 6 stems and 3 stems with removal efficiency successively for Zn was 90.37%; 82.34% and 71.37%, and Cu was 92.82%, 89.24% and 86.54%. Absorption capability of vetiver plants in Zn remediate approximately 1.96 to 4.62 ppm/day/rod, and Cu approximately 0,22 to 0,59ppm/day/rod. Zn and Cu affect vetiver plants growth seen by the yellow colour and smaller size of the leaves.
