  • Infant death is a painful event for familiy who wants to have a child, especially for a mother. Infant death may cause some unpleasant conditions for the mother. For that reason, a mother needs social support from all resources surround her. The purpose of this study is to find the the description of social support received by mothers who experienced infant death. Social support refers to something that is perceived by a person as a comfort, attention, feeling appreciated, or any assistance provided by another person or group (Sarafino, 2008). In depth interview was conducted on three subjects who had experienced the death of first child. The study lasted for 8 months (February-September 2011) in DKI Jakarta. The result shows that all three receive the social support which are emotional support, informational support, and instrumental support. Three subjects have been receiving social support since their first pregnancy, on that time when they experienced infant death events and until today. In general, emotional support is the most important support in coping a problem and giving the physical and psychological comforts to the three subjects.
