  • Research and social phenomenon shows that role can affect individual’s psychological condition. Actors job is to taking on and playing out dramatic role on the stage, and often they deal with an entirely different role from their daily self. This differences can lead to role ambivalence, the clash of feeling engendered in the taking on and playing out of conflicting roles. Although role ambivalence confronts individuals to a conflict state, but the awareness of it can lead individuals to found balance among the conflict. Modern theater performance in Indonesia is not far from folklore adaptation. Act on a role from folklore have its own difficulties. The reasons are its a fiction role and its known by most people, which can rise an expectation to the role interpretation of the actors. This study aims in describing role ambivalence on theater actors/actresses who act for a role result from folklore adaptation. Result of the study has found individuals with advanced information and familiarity with the role more prone to role ambivalence experience. Despite the emerged of ambivalence experience, all participants feel disposed to complete the process of theater production and regard the experience as a step of learning for a better self in their life.
