  • ABSTRACT Ana Nur Chasanah. 2007. The EFFECTIVENESS of BIOFILM Pseudomonas putida with PVC CONDUIT and COCONUT SHELL MATERIAL SUPPORTS to REDUCE CHROMIUM in LEATHER TANNING WASTE WATER. Biology Departement. Mathematic And Natural Science Faculty. SEBELAS MARET UNIVERSITY. The research was conducted to recognize the effectiveness and biofilm capability of Pseudomonas putida with PVC conduit and coconut shell material supports to reduce chromium (Cr) of leather tanning waste water. The research have done used bioreactor to grow biofilm with PVC conduit and coconut shell material supports. Also using P. putida inform planktonic to recognize its ability to reduce Cr. Parameter that observed was decrease of Cr concentration by biofilm and planktonic bacteria in 3 replicates. Biofilm thickness used to determine biofilm capacity. Data was analyzed by Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Duncan Multiple Range Test (DMRT) 5%. The results of the research showed that material supports differences gave significant influence on biofilm capability to reduce chromium ini leather tanning waste water inspite of had not accomplished yet. Biofilm with material support coconut shell have highest adsorption percentage reached 60,5787%, was followed PVC conduit 41,3665% and P. putida planktonic 32,0565%. Based on adsorption percentage, material support which more effective to used was coconut shell. Biofilm adsorption capacity of Cr in PVC conduit and coconut shell material supports was capacity 16,5328 mg/g and 28,5394 mg/g. Based on adsorption percentage, material support which more effective to used was coconut shell.
