- The aim of this research is to investigate the influence of fiber volume fraction and NaOH treatment on tensile strength of rami fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester composites. The materials are rami fiber, Unsaturated Polyester Resin 157 BQTN-EX, and hardener MEKPO. Rami fibers are treated with 5% NaOH for 0, 2, 4, 6, and 8 hours. Rami fiber reinforced unsaturated polyester composites were arranged randomly and fabricated by moulding technique. The specimen were tested by universal testing machine (UTM). Visual inspections were perfomed to investigate the mechanism of fracture. The results showed composites without alkali treatment obtained the highest tensile strength on a fiber volume fraction of 39.68% that is equal to 29.54 MPa. Whereas, rami fiber reinforced polyester composites treated with alkali have the highest tensile strength on fiber alkali treatment for 2 hours. The fracture surface of rami fiber reinforced polyester composites without alkali treatment showed fiber pull out, this means that the bonding between rami fiber and matrik less than perfect so that the fibers were displaced in large quantities. In the rami fiber reinforced polyester composite treated with alkali for 8 hours, mechanism of fiber pull out nearly invisible. Keyword : rami fiber, fiber volume fraction, alkali treatment, tensile strength of composite.
