- One of reactor concepts obtaining particular interest in recent years is high temperature reactor (HTR), both prismatic block fueled HTR (HTR prismatic) and pebble fueled HTR (HTR pebble bed). In HTR pebble bed design, radius and enrichment of the fuel kernel is a crucial key parameter which can be chosen freely to determine the desired value of criticality. Criticality of the reactor itself is strongly influenced by neutron moderation which its performance also depends on radius and enrichment of the fuel kernel. This paper investigates criticality of the HTR pebble bed as a function of radius and enrichment of the kernel with Monte Carlo transport code MCNPX.The criticality calculations were done at various fuel burnup by utilizing continuous energy nuclear data library ENDF/B-VI. From the calculation results can be concluded that fuel enrichment increases reactor lifetime and reactor multiplication factor (keff) of HTR pebble bed core. The larger kernel radius decreases the reactor lifetime, it also causes the decreasing of keff at BOC and EOC. The high enrichment and radius of kernel produces the decreased swing reactivity with fuel burnup. Keywords: HTR, criticality, radius, fuel Kernel
