- This research departs from the phenomenon of the use of public space by informal sector which in this case is a street vendor (PKL) which is located in front of campus of North Sumatera University (USU) which is located in Jalan Dr. Mansyur, this study aims to see what kind of traders of the informal sector as well as factors that cause street vendors to keep using the area as a place to sell and assess the impact caused by street vendors in the region. The research method used is qualitative and quantitative research methods but in this study more dominant on the descriptive qualitative by analyzing the results of observations and interviews obtained from the informants in the study of related government, traders who sell on the area as well as road users both pedestrians and users motor vehicle. And reinforced with the data of questionnaires distributed by researchers on respondents researchers. The results of the study found that the characteristics of the informal sector in the Dr. Mansyur is seen from the type of trade in general in the form of fast food and food items and services, then the means of trade used in the form of semi-permanent stalls, carts and mats base / tampa base with the formation of a line along the line pavement form. Factors that cause street vendors to keep trading at Dr. Mansyur because the strategic location is characterized by high mobility around the area that comes from the community and students. This activity has an impact on the limited pedestrian space.
