  • The purpose of this study was to find out the strategy of teaching reading comprehension which was mostly preferred by the students. The research was conducted at SMPN 11 Mataram in academic year 2009/2010. The strategies were applied through three kinds of lesson plan in performing the interesting teaching learning process so that the students concentrated to comprehend the text given. With the combination of observation and interview research technique, it was found that there were three strategies used by the English teacher. In the first lesson plan, the teacher put in front the comprehension by giving the overview of reading material through personal activities; in the second lesson plan, the teacher focused the teaching learning process with the comprehensive comprehension through the pronunciation understanding and the meaning of the words. In the last lesson plan, the strategy was the combination between the both strategies above with vocabulary and grammar understanding, and the teaching learning process was focused on the group' activities. Of the three strategies, strategy number three was the most successful and preferred by the students.
