- This research entitled “Analysis on the Level of Students’ Understanding of Target Language Culture: A Descriptive Study at 7thSemester of English Department of Mataram University Academic Year of 2015/2016” aims at discovering the level of students’ understanding of the target language culture. The population of this research was 138 students of 4classes, and the sample was 35 students. Using descriptive research, a test and an interview are used as the instrument to collect the data. Data computation from the test shows that the mean score of all students is 57.77 which categorized as fair. It is concluded that the level of students’ understanding of the target language is in fair category. Meanwhile, the result from the interview shows that there were five factors as the causes of students difficultiesin understanding the target language culture which are different system norms between the western and eastern culture itself, lack of information obtained by the students on campus, less practice with native speaker directly, lack of motivation in learning the target language and the last one is misunderstanding
