  • Sugarcane (Saccharum officinarum) is mostly used as a drink by grinding and then taken the extract, while the bagasse is not used anymore and becomes waste. the effort that can be done to overcome the bagasse waste problem is to convert the bagasse into activated charcoal. Activated charcoal is charcoal that has pores with a large surface area, so as to enhance the adsorption power. This study aims to determine the characteristics of activated charcoal from bagasse using physical activation and the effect of temperature variations on its characteristics. This study used an experimental method with Completely Randomized Design. Physical activation was performed with three variations of temperature, which is 600 ° C, 700 ° C and 800 ° C for 120 minutes. The results were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 5% significance level. If there was a significant difference, then tested further by using Honestly Significant Difference (HSD) at 5% level. The results showed that activated charcoal bagasse using physical activation has an average value of the yield of 13,61%, moisture content 1,46%, volatile matter 26,27%, ash content 22,20%, fixed carbon to 51.63% and the absorption of iodine 459, 52 mg/g. Activation temperature significantly affected yield, volatile matter, fixed carbon and iodine absorption. The best activation temperature used in this study is at a temperature of 800 ° C.
