- Connection adhesives are widely used in the otomotive industry, aircraft industry, and eloctronicals industry. This research aims to determine the effect of water on the shear strength of the adhesive connection of low carbon steel and failure mode when the thickness of the adhesive is different. The connection is made from low carbon steel with epoxy adhesive as the connective media. Varied adhesive thickness is 0,1 mm, 0,2 mm, 0,3 mm, 0,4 mm, and 0,5 mm. Specimen immersed in distilled water at atemperature 60oC for 15 days, after that shear testing. The result showed that the dry conditions increasing the thickness of the adhesive increases the shear strength of the connection. For wet conditions the shear strength of connections increases with thickness up to the boundary between the optimum thickness of 0,3 mm and 0,4 mm, and the thickness of 0,5 mm occurred drastic reduction in shear strength of connection. Overall failure modes under dry conditions are interfacial and jumping occurs ( a tear in the adhesive from one interface to another interface). For the wet conditions of the failure mode a thickness of 0,1 mm to 0,3 mm in thickness is interfacial and jumping occurs ( a tear in the adhesive from one interface to another interface), to a thickness of 0,4 mm and 0,5 mm of the failure mode is interfacial total.
