- This study is a classroom action research used to obtain the information related to the research problems. It aims to improve the students’ speaking skill by using role play. The subject of this study was the second grade students of SMPN 1 Labuapi, especially at VIIIC class. This research is conducted by the teachers in their class with four techniques: plan,action,observation, and reflection. The data were collected by giving pre-test, treatments, and post-test. The result of this study showed that teaching speaking by using role play could improve the students’ speaking skill. Based on the result of pre-test and post-test in two cycles, it can be concluded that the second grade of students at SMPN 1 Labuapi achieved better scores in speaking after the treatments given. It can be seen from M( mean scores) of pre-test and post-test. The M(mean scores) in cycle 1 to 2 were 57.59 and 71.27. As the conclusion there was an improvement in every cycle on the students’ speaking skill taught through the implementation of role play.
