- This thesis aimed to measure the mastery of phrasal verbs and elaborate the problems in using phrasal verbs on fifth semester of English Department in the University of Mataram. So far, phrasal verb is one of the most common problems in learning English. This study employs case study involving 40 of fifth semester students of English Department as the sample which were taken from four morning classes and four afternoon classes. The test was given in determining students’ ability in coping with phrasal verb shown in the text. The test was consisted of three categories of phrasal verb which are transparent, semi- transparent, and idiomatic. To support the data from the test, a close-ended questionnaire must be filled after they finished the test. The result of the test showed that 65% students got low score in the test and the result from the questionnaire showed that most of students agreed that lack of learning, regularity of exposure and mental barriers were the main problems. Therefore, the researcher gave some recommendations which hopefully can improve students’ mastery in phrasal verb in building students’ awareness about the importance of using phrasal verbs and use phrasal verb regularly in daily life.
