- This research analyzes conversational implicature and the violation of conversational maxim in a movie entitled The Meg. The movie was chosen because the actors and actresses often use language expressions which mean different from the intended meanings. This research follows the theory of conversational implicature introduced by Herbert Paul Grice which divides the implicature into two types: generalized and particularized conversational implicature. This research applies descriptive qualitative method to answer two questions stated in the research questions. The first questionis about the types of conversational implicature used in the dialogues and the meaning of its utterance. The second is to find what types of maxims violated by the speakers through their expressions. The data are taken from the written transcript of the dialogues of the actors and actresses of the movie. The results of the study indicate that there are found 30 language expressions containing conversational implicature. It is also found that there are 39 expressions violating the conversational maxims in the dialogues. These conversational implicatures and violated maxims are used to represent power distance and to show polite rejection in a different perspective, insinuation is found to represent interpersonal relationship.
