  • Fillers are widely used to improve the mechanical properties of epoxy used as adhesives. Some fillers have advantages and disadvantages so hybridization of fillers can reduce the disadvantages of each filler. The purpose of this study was to determine the effect of hybrid fly ash and CaCO3 filler composition on the shear strength of adhesively based steel joint adhesives and their failure modes in dry and wet conditions. The joint is made of steel with epoxy as the adhesive. The filler weight fraction in adhesive is 20%. Specimens were put into the oven for a curring process for 18 hours with a constant temperature of 40 ° C and continued with soaking for 30 days in distilled water at 50 ° C. The specimens were then tested in dry and wet conditions. The test results showed that in dry condition the highest shear strength occurred in dry conditions on the adhesive with the composition of fly ash filler 0% / CaCO3 20% by 23.36 MPa and the lowest was the adhesive with the composition of fly ash filler 20% / CaCO3 0% by 14, 30 MPa. Whereas in wet conditions, the highest shear strength at the composition of fly ash filler 0% / CaCO3 20% by 21.80 MPa and the at the composition of fly ash filler 15% / CaCO3 5% by 10.48 MPa. Overall failure of dry and wet adhesive conditions is interfacial, where the interfacialfailure can occur on one side and two sides for all types of adhesives.
