- ABSTRACT This study aims to identify types of figurative language and explain the meaning of figurative language used in Avenged Sevenfold’s song lyrics. Each lyrics generally have a message delivered to the listeners.This study focused to analysing words, phrases, and sentences in Avenged Sevenfold’s song lyrics. This study used formalism theory which focus on the words, phrases, and sentences and applied descriptive qualitative method which concern in understanding the result of the data found. The data acquired from four songs in Nightmare (2010)album. After analysing, this study found eight types of figurative language, such as nine hyperboles, four ironies, two metaphors, two paradox, one synecdoche, six similes, two personifications and twelve symbolisms. Symbolism is the mostly used in the song lyrics of Avenged Sevenfold. The researcher found the meaning of song lyrics mostly describe about death. The existence of figurative language is used to beautify and to clarify the contextual meaning of the song lyrics.
