- This research aims to identify the types of speech acts performed by Irene Adler in Sherlock Holmes BBC A Scandal in Belgravia and describe their contribution to establish the coherence of the script. The method used in conducting this research is qualitative descriptive method. The source of data is the script which is retrieved from the internet. The data are analyzed by using pragmatics perspective especially Searle’s (1976) taxonomy of speech act classification and Widdowson’s (1978) theory of coherence. The total utterances which are considered as illocutionary acts are 102 utterances. They are grouped into assertive (39.2%), directive (32.3%), expressive (19.6%), commissive (6.8%) and declaration (1.9%). The most dominant type of illocutionary acts is assertive with the frequency of 40 utterances or 39.2% out of 102 total utterances, which are categorized into disagreeing, telling, stating, arguing, assuming, informing, convincing, believing, agreeing, warning, reporting, ensuring, affirming, boasting, explaining, asserting, and predicting. Moreover, utterances indicating speech acts by Irene Adler seems to give a significant contribution to establish the coherence of the script of Sherlock Holmes BBC A Scandal in Belgravia.
