  • This study is aimed at finding the effect of using Word Splash to improve students’ lexical competence. In this research, the population was the second year students of SMP 1 Narmada. I used simple random sampling technique to obtain the research sample; there were 76 students altogether that were taken from class VIII1 and VIII6. The data are collected by giving two test; vocabulary pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed quantitatively. From the data analysis, I found the students’ lexical competence was significantly increased. The improvement was denoted by the score which students in both of the group, Experimental and Control Group achieved. In pre-test the lowest score of Experimental Group was 36 and the highest score was 84. Then, the lowest score in Control Group was 16 and the highest score was 72. Meanwhile, in the post-test the lowest score in the Experimental Group was 52 and the highest score was 100, while in the Control Group the lowest score was 40 and the highest score was 84. Then, the data distributed in the first computation to find the mean deviation score that is 22.105 for Experimental group, and 18 for the Control Group. After the mean deviation score computation, t-test was applied to find whether the use of Word Splash is able or not to improve students’ lexical competence. The result of t-test was 1.889 which is higher than t-table = 1.665, it means that there is significant improvement of using Word Splash strategy. In conclusion, there is significant effect in the use of Word Splash to improve students’ lexical competence at the second year students of SMP 1 Narmada Academic Year 2011/2012.
