  • This is a classroom action research and was conducted at second grade students in SMPN 2 Kuripan in class VIII A in academic year 2010/2011. The total number of students in this class was 31 students. There were 19 females and 12 males. The researcher focused on improving students’ achievement in reading comprehension using scanning and skimming technique. The data were collected by using test, interview, and teacher’s observation. There are two cycles in this research. Each cycle consisted of four steps: planning, action, observation, and reflection. The first cycle consisted of 6 meetings and the second cycle consisted of 5 meetings. The result showed that in the first cycle there was an improvement in students’ achievement in reading comprehension after the treatment. From 31 students in the class, there were 7 students (22.5%) who passed the learning mastery in the pretest and increased to 21 students (67%) in the first posttest but this result could not achieve the target of learning mastery. Additionally, there were problems about students’ concentration and difficulties in finding the meaning of a sentence. Therefore, the researcher continued to the second cycle. In this cycle, the result showed that there was an improvement in students’ achievement. The number increase from 21(67%) students in the first posttest to 28 (90.4%) students in the second posttest. The students seemed more concentrated in the classroom and their ability in finding the meaning of a sentence also increased. In summary, the use of scanning and skimming technique could improve students’ achievement in reading comprehension.
