  • The recent study dealt with “the use of pictures to improve vocabulary”. The data were analyzed statistically and the main purpose of this investigation is to know if pictures have positive effects for teaching English vocabulary. The population of this research was the fourth grade students in SDN 3 Sengkol in academic year 2010/2011 and the sample of this study consist of one class or 18 students. The technique in collecting data the students were given tests as pre-test and post-test. The data were analyzed by using t-test. The result showed that the pictures have positive effect (t-test 15.74  t-table 2.1098 and t-test  t-table 2.8982 and also all students at fourth grade said that “strongly agree” to the use of pictures in teaching and learning vocabulary) because there some reasons: (a) it was easier for students to memorize words, (b) attracted the students to creative. The students were treated by using pictures to improve their vocabulary. Finally, this study suggests that: (a) the teacher should consider the application pictures in their taking of vocabulary, (b) the English teacher ought to be more carefully in choosing media especially in teaching vocabulary, (c) the teacher should be such in touching media especially in teaching vocabulary, (d) the teacher should also create situation in which the learners realize that they need know certain words of the target language to increase their English.
