  • Every learning process always involves two elements, namely comprehension and production (understanding what is learned and the ability to use that understanding in practice). Before one is able to produce a sentence, he must first understand the meaning of the resulting sentence. In other words, understanding (comprehension) is a competence that first occurred before the ability to produce (production) in the language acquisition and language learning. Therefore, all aspects of language understanding (language comprehension) initiate or facilitate the ability to produce language (language production). In many theories of learning a second/ foreign language, before learners attempt new tasks in the learning process, they need to understand what they will do. Thus it is assumed that comprehension should and always initiate production capabilities. But on the other hand, it is assumed also that there is always a gap between comprehension and production. One's understanding of something does not guarantee the person is able to express/produce what he has already understood. This is called asymmetric relationship between comprehension and production. Based on the research, it reveals that the students understand the grammatical structures of simple sentences in English (comprehension competence) by an average of 65.64 (65.64%) with a variation of the distribution of scores between them at 8.79. This result is much different from the average score of their production competence which is only 28.36. This means that their sentence production competence is only 28.36% of the expected score of 100 from production test, with a standard deviation of 17.37, which means that the differences in the ability to make English sentences among students are relatively large. The gap between the level of comprehension and production level is also relatively large, ie from 65.64 - 28.36 = 37.28 or 37.28% which means that the students’ average production competence is 37.28% under their comprehension competence. Besides, there is a significant relationship between comprehension and production to the level of correlation of 0.671. However, the influence of the comprehension variable on the production variable that is done by calculating the coefficient of determination is only 45%.
