- Pesantren is a traditional dormitory where students live together and study under the guidance of Kiai directly. Quite often Islamologists pay attention to the development of Pesantren education from time to time, one of them is Zamakhsyari Dhofier. He conducted a serious research on Pesantren and published the work entitled Tradisi Pesantren. This study aims to make corrections on the variation of Islamic studies in the archipelago. In his research, he used ethnography to understand Islamic culture in the archipelago. The research objects were focused on two pesantren: Tebuireng and Tegalsari. These two Pesantrens are the representations of Pesantren in Indonesia. Zamakhsary Dhofier discovered two types of Pesantren education, they are: classical integration and modern school. The tradition of Pesantren educator institution that lasted long in Indonesia became a distinctive identity compared to Islamic community in other countries.
