- Elderly can experience a decline both psychologically and physically. Psychological decline experienced by elderly including feelings of uselessness, loneliness, and the most common is depression (Mubarak, Chayatin & Santoso, 2009). Data released by the Ministry of Social Affairs of the Republic of Indonesia shows that the number of depressed elderly people increase significantly every year. The elderly were depressed about 18% in 2009 and 32 % in 2011. Synder & Linquist (2002) states that music therapy can overcome depression. Music is an organized hearing stimulus. Music can improve, restore, nourish the physical, mental and emotional individuals in order to resolve depression. The purpose of this study is to determine the effect of popular music therapy on depression in the elderly at Social Home Tresna Werdha Karitas Cimahi. The research method used pre experimental with one group pre-posttest design. 16 elderly people who experience depression are taken as sample by using purposive sampling. The results showed that the mean depression score of elderly before and after being given popular music therapy was 7 and 4.44 respectively. Furthermore, the result shows that there is a mean difference of 2,563. The result of statistical test can be concluded there is a significant influence of popular music therapy on depression in elderly at Social Home Tresna Werdha Karitas Cimahi (p value 0.0001; α = 0,05).This study suggested the popular music therapy can be used as a therapy for depressed elderly.
