- Introduction: Sexual function has enormous impact on the quality of life of both the male and female gender. The usage of drugs to enhance sexual function may result in many dangerous side effects, which lead to the search for alternative medicine that utilizes more natural ingredients with fewer side effects. One example is Chinese ginseng (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer), that is believed to have aphrodisiac properties. Objective: to examine the effect of Chinese ginseng rhizome toward sexual behavior. Methods: This research used the comparative, real experimental method, with a complete randomized design. The experiment used 25 Swiss-Webster strain male mice, aged 7-8 weeks, weighing around 20-30 grams. The mice were randomly divided into 5 experimental groups (with n=5). Each of the mice in group 1 through 3 was given a Chinese ginseng rhizome ethanol extract (CGREE), dose 1 (26 mg/kgBW), dose 2 (52 mg/kgBW), and dose 3 (104 mg/kgBW), respectively. The control and comparative groups were given Na-CMC 1% and eugenol, respectively. All groups were treated every day for seven days. Data collected were the amount of introducing and mounting for the 1st and 2nd fifteen minutes on the 3rd, 5th, and 7th day of observation. Statistical analysis of data collected was done using One way ANAVA, followed by Tukey HSD test with α=0.05. Results: CGREE dose 1, 2 and 3 statistically increased the amount introducing when compared to the control group in all three days of observation (p ≤ 0.01). CGREE dose 1, 2 and 3 have no significant difference in increasing the occurrence of mounting. Conclusion: Chinese ginseng rhizome (Panax ginseng rhizome) ethanol extracts was proven effective in increasing sexual behavior.
