The Effect of Celery Ethanol Extract (Apium graveolens L.) on Male Adult's Blood Pressure

  • Introduction: Hypertension is a part of diseases of the cardiovascular system and one of the most common health problems in the world. Hypertension can be prevented by living a healthy lifestyle and regular exercise. As for the treatment, other tahn using a synthetic medicine, hypertension can also be treated using herbal medicine, usch as celery. Celery (Apium graveolens L.) has been used empirically to lowering blood pressure.Objectives: to observe the effect of celery ethanol extract (CEE) on lowering male adult's blood pressure.Method: This research was an experimental and comparative using pre test and post test as its design. The experiment was done on 30 adult male. Blood pressures (systole and diastole) measured on sitting position using the combine method, both before and after drinking celery ethanol extract, once a day, until one week. The data analyzed using the paired "t" test and Wilcoxon signed rank test with a=0.05.Results: The result of this research were average blood pressure after drinking CEE was 109,40/70, 20 mmHg; while blood pressure before drinking CEE was 116, 02/74, 79 mmHg (p<0.001).Conclusions: Celery (Apium graveolens L.) can reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure.
