  • Heartleaf madeiravine (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) leaves, traditionally, are used to treat various diseases including to decrease blood glucose level. Objective: This study aims to determine the effect of heartleaf madeiravine leaves extract in lowering blood glucose level and in repairing a damage of -pancreas cells. Methods : This experimental research uses Swiss Webster mice The extract was tested on diabetic Swiss Webster mice induced by alloxan at a dose of 70 mg/kg bw intravenously . Doses used for treating these mice were 50 mg/kg bw and 200 mg/kg bw orally for 14 days .Blood glucose level of the mice were measured after 7 and 14 days administration of the extract. The pancreas cell of treated mice were observed histologicaly on day 14. Result: The research showed that the methanol extract of heartleaf madeiravine leaves at a dose of 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg bw could lower blood glucose level significantly different compared to control group (p<0.05) either on day 7 or on day 14 and increased the number and repaired the damage of - pancreas cell. Conclusion: Methanol extract of heartleaf madeiravine leaves can be used to treat diabetes mellitus induced by alloxan in mice.
