The Relationship between Demographic Profile and the Success of Ascariasis Therapy Using Betelnut (Areca catechu L) Seed Tablet

- Introduction:Soil Transmitted Helminthiasis is still the commonest commmunity problem that has high prevalence in Indonesia. One of its cause is the demographic factors. In recent years, the study on Ascariasis alternative therapy is very massive. One of them is betelnut seed (Areca catechu L) that is considered has active substance to be this alternative therapy. Objective: to know the relationship between demographic profile to the success therapy of Ascariasis using betelnut seed (Areca catechu L) tablet. Methods: This is an analytic study of cross sectional using subjects of four elementary schools in Jember and including 28 students. The subjects observed in this study have been diagnosed as Ascariasis and has been administered of betelnut seed tablet and then questioned using questionnaire. Result: Most of the students are women (71,4%), Maduranese (71,4%), 12 years old (57,1%), have family number of 4 (64,3%), parent’s education in elementary school (85,7%), and have parents as farmer (92,9%). Chi Square test shows that p > 0.05 so that those factors (sex, age, number of family, parent’s education, and parent’s job) do not have significant effect. Apart from the demographic factors, there are some factors that can affect the success of the therapy including personal hygiene, environment, humidity, health awareness in a family. These may cause most of the demographic factors do not have significant effect. Conclusion: The demographic profile does not have any relationship with the success of therapy using betelnut seed (Areca catechu L) tablet. Nevertheless, the demographic profile can show that the worm infection mostly occured in low economic level and low educational level.
