  • Emotions are important in the classroom since it has impact on learning. In other words, emotional state can encourage or discourage the student especially in learning speaking. in the case of foreign language learning, students’ emotions tend to be more discouraging rather than encouraging. One of the emotional states that make such process becomes difficult is anxiety. This research is aimed to figure out what factors are more posible to cause anxiety in learning speaking as perceived by the 4th semester students of Faculty of Education and Teacher Training Department of English Language Education at Ar-Raniry State Islamic University.Therefore, this thesis entitled “Sophomore Students’ Anxiety in Learning Speaking: Some Affecting Factors” The method was used in this study was qualitative method with case study approach. To identify what factors that may contribute to anxiety in learning speaking based on the students’ perspectives. Purposive sampling is the technique that the writer used in choosing the sample. Ten anxious students were selected as the participants. The data were gathered through observations classroom, and structured interviews. The result of the study showed that speaking in front of the class, lack of preparation, being ridiculed by peers, incomprehensible input, students’ beliefs about language learning, and teacher personality, were the six factors that may contribute to the students’ anxiety in learning speaking
