- Background: Health education is a process in giving the health information so that a person can change their health behavior as expected. Some people are still treat the patients with mental disorders by binding, confining, and shackling. The families need a knowledge and information how to deal with the family members who have the mental disorder. Objective: to know the effect of a health education about the risk of violence behavior (RVB) toward family knowledge in treating the patients in the Mental Hospital RSJD of DR. RM. Soedjarwadi Klaten. Methods: This research is experimental design with one group pre test - post test, The research subjects were the family members who treated the patients being visiting to the mental hospital RSJD of DR. RM. Soedjarwadi Klaten. The samples taken 30 people by using the accidental sampling method.The measurement instrument used questionnaires. The analysis of statistical data processing used the T test. Results: Pre test shown that 12 respondents (40%) having a good knowledge. Post test shown that 20 respondents (66%) having a good knowledge. The analysis of T test was obtained the result of P value (sig 2-tailed) about 0.008 compared with value about 0.05. P values was < value that indicates the average difference between before and after the respondents were given by the health education about RVB. Conclusion: There was an effect of a health education about RVB toward family knowledge in treating the patients in the mental hospital RSJD of DR. RM. Soedjarwadi Klaten.
