The Correlation Between in English Songs and Students' Listening Proficiency

- This research is entitled “The Correlation between Interest in English Songs and Students’ Listening Proficiency”. The objective of this research is to analyze in what extent the interest in English songs have an effect on students’ listening skills in MAN 3 Mulawarman Banjarmasin. This research is based on the theory of Slameto (2010) stating that learning is more successful when dealing with interest of students. This research is a correlation research which the data is analyzed quantitatively. The population of the research is 209 students in the twelfth grade students of MAN 3 Mulawarman Banjarmasin. Then, 131 students become the samples which took by using table of Isaac and Michael. The instruments of collecting data are questionnaire to measure the students’ interest in English songs and a test to measure their listening skill. Furthermore, Pearson product moment formula is used in order to find the correlation between interest in English songs and students’ listening proficiency. The result of this study shows that (1) Interest in English songs in the twelfth grade students of MAN 3 Mulawarman Banjarmasin is in fair category. There are 99 of 131 students or 75.57% averagely got score between 57 and 78. (2) Listening Proficiency in the twelfth grade students of MAN 3 Mulawarman Banjarmasin is in fair category because the mean score of the listening test is 50,46. (3) There is a positive medium correlation between interest in English songs and students’ listening proficiency in the twelfth grade students of MAN 3 Mulawarman Banjarmasin which is the value of rxy is 0,599.
