Pd,I M.Pd,I M.A. Key words: Effectiveness, Semantic Mapping Technique, Vocabulary, Mastery. Vocabulary is one of the essential aspects of language. There is some technique in teaching vocabulary. One of them is by using semantic mapping technique. The writer is interested in this technique and wants to prove that using semantic mapping will improve students’ vocabulary mastery. The formulation of the research problems were: How is the effective of using semantic mapping technique in improving vocabulary mastery students and how is the students’ respond toward semantic mapping technique in improving vocabulary mastery of the seventh grade students at SMPN 5 Kotabaru. Then, the objectives of this research are to know and find out the answers of problem statements above. The Population of the research is all of the students’ at SMPN 5 Kotabaru on seventh grade. The number of them are consist 127 from all students at SMPN 5 Kotabaru, but the writer takes VII A 31 students as the control class and VII B 32 students’ as the experiment class. The total number of the samples are 63 students. The writer using purposive sampling. To collect data, the writer uses some techniques such as observation, interview, questionnaire, and test. Data processing in this research is divided into four phrases: editing, coding, scoring, and data interpretation. Then, all the data are analyzed by using quantitative approach. This research find out the effective of using semantic mapping technique in improving vocabulary mastery is in fair category (gain test=0.0708) and the students’ respond toward semantic mapping technique in improving vocabulary mastery is in very good category (72, 26 %.).
