Andi Irlina M.Hum The problem of this research is how the students' ability in degree of comparisons of eighth grade students at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 4 Banjarmasin academic year 2009/2010. Based on that formulation problem, the purpose of the research is to know the students’ ability in using degree of comparisons of eighth grade students at Junior High school academic year 2009/2010. The population of this research is all eighth grade students that amount 116 which consist of three classes. The writer uses proportional random sampling technique. It means that the sample is taken randomly and only some students are taken in each class. Sample of this research is about 25% of all population there are 29 students To collect the data, the writer uses some techniques such as written test, observation, interview and documentary. Then all the data are processed through editing, coding, tabulating and interpretating, after that all the data are analyzed descriptive qualitatively and concluded inductively. The result of this research showed that the level of Students’ Ability in Using Degree of Comparisons of Eighth Grade Students at Junior High School Muhammadiyah 4 Banjarmasin Academic Year 2009/2010 is categorized as fair category by mean 50,41. Kinds of degree of comparison that the students get difficulties to understand are comparative and superlative forms that consist of two or more syllables (adjective and adverb) and irregular comparison.
