Individually, language is used to express ideas to other people while socially; language is used for interacting one another. The purposes of this research are to find out the current descriptions of the mastery in English diphthong by the seventh semester students of English Department and to know the factors which influence the mastery of the seventh semester students in pronouncing English diphthong. The subjects of this research are the seventh semester students of English Department at Antasari State Institute for Islamic Studies academic year 2007-2008. The object of this research is the mastery of English diphthong pronunciation by the seventh semester students of English Department at Antasari State Institute for Islamic Studies academic year 2007-2008. Some techniques that have been used for collecting the data are test, questionnaire, observation, and documentary. The data processing in this research is divided into 5 steps, they are: editing, coding, frequency computing, tabulating, and interpreting. Then, all of the data were analyzed descriptively and qualitatively and then concluded inductively. The result of the test shows that the mastery of English diphthong by the seventh semester students of English Department academic year 2007-2008 can be categorized as high enough category because most of them got the score about 60-79. The students’ mastery on English diphthong pronunciation are influenced by some factors, they are: students’ factor (interest: middle category), motivation: high category, and learning activities: low category), lecturer’s factor (educational background: high category, teaching method: low category, and teaching experiences: middle category), facilities factor (the availability of teaching learning media: high category).
