  • Background: Lead is a toxic metal that can affect fertility in men Objective: To evaluate sperm concentration and the blood lead levels in men occupationally exposed to motor vehicle gas emission. Methode: Sample semen from 60 men as parking workers (severe exposed workers and mild exposed workers). In a comparative cross sectional study of 30 men as parking workers (severe exposed workers, 8 hours/day, 8.1 ± 3.1 years exposure) and 30 men mild exposed as control living in the same area. Semen was analyzed following World Health Organization (WHO) procedure and blood lead levels was measured using atomic absorption spectrophotometry· Result: Mean of sperm concentration was significantly lower in severe exposed mild workers versus mild exposed workers. Mean levels of sperm concentration was 27,63 ± 10,16 x 103/cc (severe exposed workers), and 38,99 ± 14,46 x 103/cc (mild exposed workers). Mean blood lead levels were significantly higher in severe exposed workers, i.e. 1.8 times higher than in mild exposed workers (168.22 ± 28.68 μg/dL versus 92,01 ± 23.25 μg/dL). Blood lead levels were inversely correlated with sperm concentration. Conclusion: The present study shows that the blood lead levels: 1) have adversely affected sperm concentration, 2) are inversely correlated with sperm concentration, and 3) are below the WHO­ recommended health based limit for occupational lead exposure in male subjects.
