  • Compressor C2231C is one of the important devices in the factory-1 PT. Petrokimia Gresik. This compressor serves to supply the pressurized-air pneumatic systems spread in the factory-1. Currently there is a problem which the intercooler installed on the compressor does not work optimally, due to the blockage inside the tube. This blockage results the heat exchanger performance decreasing. So it was decided to remove the fins attached to the tube so that the blockage could be reduced. The removing causes the pressurized air temperature increase, while there is temperature limit of pressurized air before entering the pneumatic systems, which is 100 ̊C. The analysis was performed to obtain the value of heat transfer rate and discharge air-temperature of heat exchanger without fins, whether the discharge air-temperature of heat exchanger exceeds the specified limit. The analysis was carried out using ε-NTU method, where the temperature of both fluids entering heat exchanger and dimension of the heat exchanger are known. In this method, the effectiveness value (ε) and NTU calculated to obtain the heat transfer rate (Q) and the exit air temperature of heat exchanger (Thot out). The results show that removing fins cause the rate of heat transfer decreases and the temperature of discharge air increases. In the fouling state, the discharge air temperature of 2nd stage heat exchanger with fins is 60 ̊C. And the discharge air temperature of 2nd stage heat exchanger without fins is 82,23 ̊C. Therefore, the conclusion is that removing fins can be done, because even in the fouling condition, the temperature of discharge air is still below the temperature limit.
